I've received questions about Muslim Christmas - and rather than the one-at-a-time response, I'm posting answers on the website to clarify some really good questions.
Do Muslims believe in Jesus?
You can read the full text here: "Muslims respect and revere Jesus (peace be upon him). They consider him one of the greatest of God’s messengers to mankind." There are terrific discussions to be had regarding Christ, his teachings and their evolution into Islam - but those are best conducted with folks with much better theological background than I. One place to look would be the good folks at Zaytuna
Does this mean this is an Islamic celebration of Christmas?
No, there is no religious aspect to Muslim Christmas as there is no religious significance to December 25th for Muslims. That our Christian brothers and sisters celebrate Christmas is wonderful thing and we hope their prayers and celebrations are joyous.
Seems like a lot of folks from a number of faiths are getting together at Muslim Christmas - isn't this a "Muslim only" thing?
Hardly! We welcome anyone who wants to spend some time with us. In terms of welcoming those of all faiths, muslims are reminded of this passage from the Quran:
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). Quran 049:013
So if you would like to join the fun you are cordially invited!
So what are Muslims doing celebrating this holiday? Isn't a Muslim celebrating Christmas, well, "bad"?????
Christmas in the USA is (almost) a secular holiday that enjoins everyone in the country to take the day off. Govenment buildings, private offices, schools and just about everything else is closed with the idea that friends and family get together. Given that Muslims in the US have the day off, we should take advantage of the "spirit" of getting together and sharing some time enjoying the good company of friends and family. I like movies and having a meal with lots of folks, so that's my idea of fun.
What do Muslims celebrate?
There are two Muslim holidays that are celebrated, Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha. The exact dates are determined by Lunar calendar, meaning they move "back" about 10 days every year. The holiday is celebrated with the many colors of the traditions where Islam is practiced.
